First journal article

So I published my first journal article after months of editing and proof-reading.

I received two rejections, PNAS rejected the manuscript because one reviewer claimed that my work is too similar to another paper that was recently published. Advanced Functional Materials rejected it outright without reviewing. In the end, we submitted it to Nature: Scientific Reports and had it accepted after one round of revision. The paper is here: Integrated Design and Simulation of Tunable, Multi-State Structures Fabricated Monolithically with Multi-Material 3D Printing.

Then the work of promoting this paper began in earnest, or rather, before it even got officially published. Much of the material was used in a World Economics Forum talk given by my supervisor. Then Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen (I guess it’s the Swiss radio and TV broadcasting company) covered it (link). I just gave an interview to the ETHZ news team, and they will feature it on the front page and possibly get a coverage on a Swiss newspaper.

I am of course humbled and grateful for all this attention. Though, it does take a toll. The time it takes to make great looking images is significant. It is nerve-wracking making sure everything works for whomever is inspecting it. All the while I am trying to work on the next thing. I guess what I am trying to say is that I would like to make new things (as a researcher), and not have to repeatedly claim what I have done is perhaps revolutionary when I know it’s not.

Alas, here they are.
